Subproject 1 - Rainwater homescapes:
San Andrés, Colombia
How low-income residents make homescapes in San Andrés by accessing water (mainly) by rainwater harvesting?
1
San Andrés is the capital city of the department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina a coral island in the Caribbean Sea. The city has a population of 55.291, of which 58% do not access regular piped water in their homes. The city is the densest in the country.
2
Low-income residents highly depend on rain water harvesting. Water storage containers within households has been identified as a breeding site of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
3
The city, located in the Caribbean region, is particularly vulnerable to climate change and has been experiencing changes in precipitation patterns, sea level rise, and water availability.
4
This, in a context where tourism (an industry with high water demands) is the city’s main economic activity and has done little to reduce inequality.
